( April 2012.)

From April 21st to 30th, 2012, the Youth Dialogue Programme implemented its first Training for Trainers in Intercultural learning: “ToTrain is ToTransform the Future”!

Supported by the Youth in Action programme of the European Commission, the aim of this project was to increase the capacity of youth workers to promote intercultural education as trainers and facilitators.

It was addressed to 25 young people from all over Europe: Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Croatia, Romania, Portugal, Italy, Iceland, Turkey and the UK. The training was run by an international team of trainers: Andreea Loredana Tudorache (Romania), Nik Paddison (UK) and Snežana Bačlija Knoch (Serbia).

The approach of the training was focused on developing specific practical competencies of youth workers and leaders in youth field to act as trainers, focusing on intercultural education and work in intercultural settings. It made use of the richness of experiential learning and non-formal education in general.

The main topics included in the training course were: Intercultural learning (theory, methods, approached, challenges); Working in intercultural settings;  Learning in non-formal education; Design, facilitation & reflection on/of non-formal learning and group processes; Feedback, empathy & communication skills; Group and individual dynamics, Common challenges and best practices in training processes;  Self-assessment & professional development plan.
The training had three integrated learning phases:

  1. Introductory phase (preparation for the course) through distance e-learning, which consisted of 5 online units;
  2. Residential training course, from April 21st to 30th in Belgrade, Serbia;
  3. Follow-up phase through distance e-learning.

As follow-up to the course, participants have developed strong partnerships and have already applied with several common projects. And in terms of the core team of the training, based on the outcomes of the training, the Youth Dialogue Programme applied with a training course: “Beyond Clashes” that is looking at ways of dealing with intercultural clashes and is the direct follow-up to this training.
